Filipino anti-corruption activists are gathered for a demonstration at Luneta Park in Manila, Philippines 26 August 2013. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets to demand that a multimillion-dollar fund set aside for legislators be scrapped amid reports of corruption in the use of the money. The demonstration marked the first major protest against corruption under the administration of President Benigno Aquino, who had vowed to reform the system of disbursements to stop the abuses. A report by state auditors revealed that about 173 million euro (232 million dollars) of the congressional fund were funnelled to non-existent projects and organizations during 2007-09. Hundreds of people from all walks of life converged in Luneta Park Monday to protest the "pork barrel" system as the issue on the P10-billion PDAF scam heats up.

For some, the "Million People March" was a picnic, a reunion of sorts, but most importantly a statement against widespread corruption in the country.  From students to nuns, the middle-class to the impoverished, the participants had this common cry: Scrap pork.

There was a Radio Veritas booth where nuns led the rosary and then there are some groups, as well as Change.org asking for signatures against corruption. Most people wore white, as suggested by invitations making rounds in social media. Reports say some 200,000 trooped to Luneta, still short of the million goal.

Policemen were deployed along Roxas Boulevard but were greeting protesters with a smile.

Renato Reyes, secretary-general of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) said the event only shows that people have reached their tipping point.

"Unang una malaki siya, big event and it really shows people are united. Lahat ng kulay nandito. Lines have been drawn," Reyes said.

Retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz was also seen at the protest and said he was not convinced at President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's promise to abolish the Priority Development Assistance Fund.

"Ang gusto ko lang sana mangyari ay kahit paano magpatuloy itong vigilance ng mamamayan tungkol sa maraming kamalian ng pamahalaan…ang President napakarami nang sinabi, sagana sa salita pero kulang sa gawa, sinulat ng iba yung babasahin niya," Cruz said.

Then there's lawyer Romulo Macalintal, whose clients included former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and even President Aquino.
