Marijuana users celebrated as Colorado became the first US state to allow retail cannabis sales, putting it in the vanguard of efforts across the country to legalize the drug.
The western state famous for its ski resorts and breathtaking mountain vistas has issued 348 retail licenses -- including for small pot shops -- that can sell up to 28 grams of pot to people aged 21 or older, starting Wednesday.

Four cops have been arrested for firing their guns on New Year’s Eve. 

In an interview on ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda, Philippine National Police (PNP) Public Information Chief Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac said one of the four is also being considered a suspect for injuring a civilian in one of the recorded stray bullet cases.

A magnitude 4.3 quake hit Antique, Friday noon. 

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake struck around 12:48 p.m., some 34 kilometers northeast of San Jose De Buenavista, Antique.

Intensity III was felt in Tibiao; Culasi; San Jose, Antique; and Caticlan.

Those who made it through the terrifying winds, which hurled cars and parts of buildings around as they brought a surge of seawater ashore, each have a story to tell about the day Super Typhoon Haiyan struck.

This is not the right time to blame each other, says Vice President Jejomar Binay as the country reels from the devastation brought by monster typhoon "Yolanda."

“There will be time to determine what went wrong, but at this moment our urgent task is to extend much needed help to the survivors and restore vital public services,” Binay said in a statement Sunday.

International weather monitoring groups have tagged “Yolanda” (international name Haiyan) a super typhoon, warning the Philippines against a trail of death and destruction.

“Haiyan became a super typhoon Wednesday morning,” commercial weather service Accuweather said, calling Yolanda the world’s “strongest tropical system” this year.

(Last updated 2:08 p.m.) Super Typhoon Yolanda, the strongest cyclone to hit the planet in 2013, has now made its fifth landfall over Concepcion, Iloilo Friday noon as it pounds its way across the Visayas region.

It earlier made its 1st landfall over Guiuan, Eastern Samar around 4:40 a.m. and its second landfall over Dulag and Tolosa in Leyte past 7:00 a.m. It hit the ground for the 3rd time in Daanbantayan, Cebu at around 9:40 a.m. and made a fourth landfall at 10:40 a.m. in Bantayan, Cebu.

This was what the Cavite Provincial Police confirmed about the death of 25-year old Kristelle “Kae” Davantes, whose body was found in Cavite over the weekend.
 
In a phone interview, Cavite Provincial Police director, Senior Superintendent Alexander Rafael said investigators don't believe Davantes was molested before she was killed.

The death toll from a ferry disaster in the Philippines rose to 52 on Monday as more bodies were pulled from the water, the coastguard said.
Divers and patrol boats were continuing to search for 68 other people still missing after the St Thomas Aquinas ferry collided with a cargo ship on Friday night and quickly sank near the central city of Cebu, the coastguard added.

It was not the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) after all.
This, as President Benigno Aquino III on Monday claimed the accomplishments he highlighted in his fourth SONA have been made possible by the Filipino people. Echoing his pronouncement during his inaugural speech more than three years ago that Filipinos are his “boss,” Aquino said in his 2013 SONA: “SONA po ninyo ito.”
